An in-depth look at ancient Egypt following the collapse of the Old Kingdom, its reinvigoration under great military kings and the struggle to reunite Upper and Lower Egypt after colonisation by foreign kings. In a series of six seminars you will examine the social, political and military changes during the most tumultuous period in Egypt's history.

This is the second in a series of three courses that cover the chronological history of Ancient Egypt. The series will be an excellent background for our proposed Egypt study tour in early 2012.

Target Audience:
This course will be of interest to anyone who is enthusiastic about ancient history, classics and/or archaeology.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course students will have:

* Gained in-depth overview of first major political and social changes of the 1st and 2nd Intermediate Periods, the Middle Kingdom and the formation of the New Kingdom.
* Understood the internal and international politics that impacted on ancient Egypt.
* Gained insight into the social and religious developments during these periods.
* Developed an appreciation of the art, architecture and technology of the period.

Course Outline:
All six seminars will present an overview of the history and archaeology of ancient Egypt, with each seminar focusing on a particular period:

1. The 1st Intermediate Period - a de-centralised society
2. The 11th Dynasty - the emergence of Thebes
3. The 12th Dynasty - the dynamics of state
4. The 2nd Intermediate Period - The Hyksos
5. The 2nd Intermediate Period - The Egyptians
6. The early 18th Dynasty - the re-unification of Egypt

Course Format:
This series of two-hour lectures is held one evening a week, over six weeks.
