Overview:
The rise of e-publishing has pushed bookbinders to explore new methods of making books. In this hands-on weekend workshop, you start by practising different bookbinding techniques; on day two, you work on a conceptual book project of your own. During the course, you will be shown innovative ways of interacting with texts and images and how books can be used to create sculptural forms.

This is not a course on traditional book making, book repair or book restoration.

Target audience:
This course is for anyone interested in the practical skills of bookbinding, making hand-made books and their history.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have:
•learnt basic stitched and non-adhesive bookbinding techniques
•gained an understanding of historical and contemporary bookbindings
•developed concepts for interactive books.

Course outline:
The course begins with a brief history of bookbinding and an introduction to the tools and materials used. The remainder of the two-day workshop involves practical contemporary book-making exercises including working on your own conceptual book project.

Course format:
This is an intensive two-day practical course held over one weekend.

Morning and afternoon tea are provided. Participants will need to bring their own lunch.

What to bring:
You will need to bring a toolkit that includes:
•a cutting mat
•a craft knife
•a ruler
•decorative papers for book covers (choose interesting textures, patterns and colours, between 100–250gsm paper weight).

If you would like to take notes or make sketches, you may also want to bring a notebook or paper and pencils and pens.

Please wear comfortable shoes and old clothes and/or bring an apron.

Wai-te-ata Press will provide:
•text paper and card stock
•glue
•thread
•needles.

Class limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 9 participants, so please enrol early.
Teacher:
Sydney J Shep is Senior Lecturer in Print and Book Culture and The Printer, Wai-te-ata Press, Victoria University. In 1994, she received a Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council grant to study bookbinding in Scotland and, since then, has incorporated new ways of thinking about books into her letterpress and designer bookbinding practice and teaching.
