This course presents traditional and modern theories of ethics. It invites you to consider their relevance to everyday living, and issues such as climate change, criminal justice and business practice.

Target Audience:
This course will be of interest to the general public, policy advisors or people who implement policy.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course students will have:
* an understanding of the alternative purposes of ethical theory
* discussed the Greek concepts that we use today
* considered the relationship between rationality and performance
* considered the justifications used in politics, particularly utilitarianism
* an understanding of Kant�s theory of ethics
* analysed the relationship between ourselves and modernity.

Course Outline:
This one-day course will consist of two three-hour sessions that will start with an introductory lecture, to be followed by group discussion. Topics that will be covered include:
* the purposes of ethics
* how to live your life according to the Greeks
* the history of rationality
* feeling free
* the ethics of democratic governments, utilitarianism
* analysis of a passage by Kant
* metaphysics and modernity, life in the Matrix.

Course Format:
This is a Saturday course with both morning and afternoon sessions. Each session starts with an introductory lecture before the floor is opened for group discussion.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants will need to supply their own lunch, which can be purchased at nearby food outlets, or you are welcome to bring your own.

Class Limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 25 participants.
