Overview:
Do you wish to learn te reo Maori for your own interest? This eight-week course will teach absolute beginners how to use te reo Maori in the home and everyday life.

Target audience:
Everyday Maori 1 is suitable for everyone.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have learnt:

•correct pronunciation
•greetings and farewells for friends and family
•how to introduce themselves and their family
•how to acknowledge others using te reo; and
•useful vocabulary for everyday life.
Course outline:
The course covers the following topics:

•Informal greetings
•Introducing yourself
•Simple greetings, acknowledgements and farewells
•Asking and responding to the question ‘How are you?’
•Formal greetings
•Mihimihi: introducing yourself at a hui (meeting)
•Meeting and introducing other people
•Asking and responding to the question ‘Where do you live and work?’
•Numbers, days and time
•Counting and using numbers
•Counting objects, using the prefix ‘e’
•Asking how many things there are using ‘e hia?’
•Counting people
•Days of the week
•Telling the time
•Placings, using the prefix ‘tua’
•Telephone numbers
•Describing actions, people and things
•The difference between ‘ko’ and ‘he’
•Definite sentences
•The question ‘What …?’
•‘He’ with possessive pronouns
•The response
•Adjectives
•Personal pronouns
•‘Kei te’ plus verb (kupumahi) sentences
•Using ‘kei te’ plus verb sentences with a subject and object
•Asking and saying where someone is going using ‘kei te …’
•Asking and saying what someone is going to do
Course format:
The programme involves 16 hours of interactive group learning comprising two-hour sessions over eight weeks.

In addition, self-directed learning of one-to-two hours a week is expected with homework activities to facilitate self-directed learning. Learning activities focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing te reo Maori. There is no formal assessment.

Required materials:
A course workbook and audio CD will be provided.

Class limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 20 participants, so please enrol early.


Teacher:
Ewan Pohe (Rongomaiwahine, Ngati Kahungunu, Pakeha) has a PhD in Maori Studies, specialising in language revitalisation. He has been a Maori language tutor for seven years at Victoria University.
