Overview:
People learn a language for a variety of reasons - for personal satisfaction, for travel, work or study, or to communicate with family and friends. Whatever language you learn, understanding English grammar is an important starting point. How do tenses work in English? What is a verb, a pronoun, a participle or a preposition?

Grammar is the skeleton of a language – yet many of us haven’t learned English grammar at school, and are flummoxed when faced with the grammar of another language.

This course offers an enjoyable focus on the basics of English grammar, not only for those planning to learn a language, but for anyone wanting to better understand their own.

Target audience:
Those planning to learn another language, or wanting to better understand and use their own more effectively, especially in writing.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course students will be able to:

•understand the basics of English grammar as a prelude to learning another language
•improve their working knowledge of English grammar to enhance daily life and work
Course outline:

•A brief history of the English language; verbs in their many guises; conjugating verbs to tell us who and when.
•Parts of speech – nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and interjections.
•Putting together sentences – subjects, predicates, objects, clauses, phrases, subject-verb agreement, and word order. Types of sentences, singulars and plurals.
•More about objects, singulars and plurals, active and passive sentences, phrases and sentences, person, punctuation, modal verbs.
•Recognising and practising all the above in short texts, with discussion.
Course format:
Five two-hour sessions over five weeks. Sessions will be interactive with opportunities for practice and revision in all sessions.

There is a short break half-way through each session, and you are welcome to bring refreshments if you wish.

Readings and pre-course activity:
Pre-course reading is not required but for those wishing to do some, we suggest:
Michael Swan’s Practical English Usage, which can be downloaded free from various internet sites.

Teacher:
Glenys Bowman is a journalist/writer and writing teacher – and a “bit of a grammar freak”. She has taught English language and writing at secondary schools, polytechnics, and universities, most recently at Victoria University. Glenys has studied a variety of languages, and retains a working knowledge of French, mostly for travel reasons.
