Overview:
The course is for people who work in culturally diverse situations, including managers, front line staff, human resource teams, customer support and other individuals who deal with people from different cultures both in and outside of their organisations.
Based heavily in organisational and psychological research, this course applies theory and techniques to real-world situations in which we deal with issues related to cultural diversity.
You will be equipped with a wide range of tools to develop your own cultural awareness and enable you to work more effectively with those around you.
This course is presented by the Centre for Applied Cross-Cultural Research (CACR) at Victoria University.

Who Should Attend:
Employers and employees wanting to improve their effectiveness in a culturally diverse workplace, those working across cultures and/or in international business.

Course Objectives:
* Build deeper cultural awareness of self and others Identify issues in your workplace that originate from cultural differences
* Learn about intercultural communication styles
* Deal with communication issues arising from cultural diversity
* Practice intercultural communication and leadership skills

Course Outline:

* Introduction to culture
* Development of cultural self awareness
* Understanding cultural values of others
* Approaching the common issues people face when working in culturally diverse organisations

* Problem solving and role playing communication issues
* Developing an intercultural "toolkit".

Course Format:
Grounded in psychological and organisational research, this interactive workshop will provide you with a foundation of practical intercultural communication skills. You will come away with a deeper understanding of your own cultural background and the skills to manage yourself and others in culturally diverse environments. You will also be supplied with a wide variety of resources for your intercultural "toolkit".
Jaimee Stuart, BA(Hons) Psychology, MSc Cross-cultural Psychology, is a PhD candidate in VUW's School of Psychology. Jaimee specializes in the psychology of intercultural contact, with particular focus on the development of immigrant youth and multicultural identities. Jaimee is also an experienced intercultural trainer and teacher who works with community organisations as well as with Student Learning Support Services (SLSS) and Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP) in facilitating and developing intercultural communication workshops.
Jessie Wilson, BA(Hons) Psychology, MA Psychological Research, is a PhD Candidate in VUW's School of Psychology. Jessie's area of expertise lies in the cultural adaptation of migrants and international students. Originally from California, Jessie has experience working in Government and community settings with a focus on cultural diversity and working abroad. She also works as an intercultural trainer with the Victoria International Leadership Programme (VILP) in facilitating and developing intercultural communication workshops
