This workshop will discuss what you need to know about assessing data collections, making and evaluating inferences (from sample surveys, census surveys or administrative data sources). You will draw conclusions from statistical data to answer specific management, organisational or public policy questions.

This course can be attended as a stand-alone workshop or as part of the National Certificate of Official Statistics relating to the Unit standard 23270 Assess data collections and make statistical inferences in a public sector context.

Who Should Attend:
This workshop is designed for people employed in the Public Sector in positions where they are required to interpret statistical data to make and/or report decisions.

Learning Objectives:
* Assess data collections for use in a public sector context Make statistical inferences and draw conclusions from data collections in a public sector context.

Course Outline:
1. Assessing data collections
* Features of data collections
e.g. Objectives, Data collection types, Target population Sampling Frame, Sampling methods, Collection methods, Processing methods, Estimation, Analysis Methods, Confidence intervals
* Impacts of data collection features on results
2. Making statistical inferences and conclusions
* Inferences from sample data using confidence intervals for population estimates
e.g. estimates of population mean, population proportion, difference between means and proportions of two populations
* Using statistical significance to draw conclusions for a specific management, organisational or policy question.

Course Format:
This is an interactive two-day workshop. It forms part of the National Certificate in Official Statistics but can also attended as a stand-alone workshop.

Murray Black is the Associate Head of School (Mathematical Sciences) at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), currently completing a PhD on Statistical Reasoning. He has an MSc(Hons) and a Diploma of Teaching, and originally trained as a secondary teacher and taught first at Birkdale College before AUT. He is an Assessor for the National Certificate and has been an Examiner with NZQA.
