Overview:
This course introduces different kinds of travel writing: short newspaper articles, longer magazine essays and travel books. The focus will be on the travel book because it allows for greater narrative possibility than the other forms. You will undertake exercises which will help develop your writing and ‘noticing’ skills, and produce a longer piece that will be workshopped in the group.

Target audience:
This course is for anyone interested in the art and challenge of travel writing.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have:
•been introduced to different ways writers report on their travel experiences
•developed pieces of their own writing
•improved their ability to critique their own work and that of others
•developed their writing skills, with a particular emphasis on travel writing.

Course outline:
The three sessions involve discussion, directed writing practice and workshopping of assignments, including:
•warm-up and workshop exercises
•analysis of different styles of travel writing
•completion of a travel story.

Course format:
This is an intensive three-day, hands-on course held over two weekends (Saturday, Sunday and Saturday). It includes ‘homework’ to be undertaken between sessions (including overnight between the Saturday and Sunday sessions). Please bring any assignments on a memory stick. If you do not have access to a computer, you will need to bring 13 photocopies of your work to share with the group.

Morning and afternoon tea are provided. Participants will need to bring their own lunch or can buy it from nearby food outlets.

Teacher:
Catharina van Bohemen has a Master’s degree in English literature and completed the MA in Creative Writing in 2008. In A Passion for Travel: New Zealand Writers and Their Adventures Overseas (ed Tina Shaw, Random Press, 1998) she wrote about being on safari in Zimbabwe. She is a regular reviewer for New Zealand Books and Artzone. She taught travel writing and life writing at the Wellington campus of Massey University from 2009 to 2010.
