Overview:
In this course, poetry is presented both on and off the page. Elements of chance, play and sound are introduced, alongside a solid grounding in the technical aspects of honing language and style. The course focuses on workshopping – that is, sharing of your work, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Participants are given challenging and enjoyable writing exercises and time to complete them in class, plus exercises as inspiration for between classes.

Guidelines are given to focus discussion on important questions: What is ‘good’ poetry? How can you improve your poems? How do you give and receive constructive feedback? How can you make writing a regular part of your life?

Target audience:
This course is for anyone who is interested in writing poetry. No previous formal writing experience is required.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have:

•learnt how to workshop poetry in positive and useful ways
•written several new poems
•developed skills for giving and receiving constructive feedback on new poems
•developed an appreciation for a range of new poems, in written and other media
•learnt and discussed ways to make writing poetry part of their daily life.
Course outline
The three sessions involve writing, reading, hearing, responding to and analysing poems, including participants’ own poems, according to clear guidelines.

Course format:
This is a three-day, hands-on course held on consecutive Saturdays. The course focuses on workshopping, where participants share work and develop skills in giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Participants are given challenging and enjoyable writing exercises and time to complete them in class, plus exercises as inspiration for between classes.

Morning and afternoon tea is provided. Participants will need to bring their own lunch or can purchase it at nearby food outlets.

Pre-course Activity:
For the first session please bring with you 13 photocopies of a favourite poem, and be prepared to talk about why you like it.

Class limit
This course is limited to a maximum of 12 participants, so please enrol early.

Teacher:
Hinemoana Baker (Raukawa/Toa/Te Āti Awa, Ngā Tahu, Pākehā) is a writer, musician and teacher of creative writing. She completed her MA at the Institute of Modern Letters in 2002. She has published two poetry collections, mātuhi | needle (2004) and kōiwi kōiwi | bone bone (2010). Her work has featured in many anthologies, including several editions of Best New Zealand Poems. She was Arts Queensland Poet in Residence in 2009, and writer in residence at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Programme in 2010.
