Project Management Fundamentals is a programme that has been designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and best practices needed to be an effective project manager in a variety of environments. This course is best suited to those who are new to project management or those who are currently involved in managing projects but have no formal training in this discipline.

As one of NZIM's most popular programmes, you will have the opportunity to be taught by experienced project manager's who have led successful projects in various capacities worldwide.



Learning Outcomes

Conceive a project
•Bring projects in on time and avoid budget over-runs to achieve business outcomes

Develop a project
•Develop a work breakdown structure for a project
•Conduct a project task analysis and prepare project Gantt charts and network diagrams
•Assign resources to tasks and prepare project resource schedules
•Prepare a project budget based on task costings

Execute a project
•Develop project status reports
•Monitor project process including earned value analysis
•Conduct project reviews and team meetings
•Manage conflict and change associated with a project

Finish and evaluate a project
•Close the project and evaluate its performance



Jim Young


Jim Young
Jim is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and PRINCE2 Practitioner who holds a MBA in International Management and a Doctoral degree in Business Administration.



Initially educated at Hokitika District High School NZ and Duntroon Military College in Australia, Jim served as a career officer in the NZ Army, and then managed a commercial transport organisation, after which he joined NZIM, becoming their Principal Consultant before establishing his own company SkillPower Ltd that specialises in project management advice, mentoring and training.



Jim has managed a wide variety of projects from the design and construction of a multi-fuel pipeline in Wales to the logistic support for the South Pacific Games and South Pacific Forum in Raratonga.



He has written several papers and two substantial textbooks on project management, and developed a number of project management handbooks for organisations. He is familiar with most project management frameworks including the PMI PMBOK and UK PRINCE2 and keeps up to date with developments in this emerging profession.



Jim is recognised as a capable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic presenter and has developed and delivered customised project management training for 22 years to over 100 organisations locally and overseas – most more than once.



He has personally developed and regularly presents the following project management training programmes tailored to meet specific in-company needs:

Steven Briggs



Steven describes himself as; “someone who relentlessly seeks new challenges and is passionate about helping people deliver sustainable results”. He is an experienced business consultant and project manager that came to New Zealand in 2006. Steven is Managing Director of See The Light Consulting – a management consultancy helping organisations transform their performance by adopting good business practices, particularly related to project management, change management, lean and agile techniques.



Initially educated at Loughborough University in the UK, he most recently worked for Fonterra, leading their Continuous Improvement programme in Trade and Operations. Prior to that he worked for one of our top Civil Engineering consultancies, Aurecon, leading their Advisory Group. Steven hails from the UK, where he worked as a management consultant at KPMG for over 6 years.



Steven is a PRINCE2 practitioner and also a UK Chartered Engineer. He has won prizes from Rolls Royce and Ford for his academic achievements but values his corporate credentials more.



Steven facilitates courses in project management, quality management, business case design and problem solving as well as carrying out other specific training assignments for private clients. He advises on change management, project management, problem solving and performance improvement.

Amanda Warren


Amanda Warren
As a Management Consultant Amanda has delivered successful outcomes on a wide range of change programmes specifically within the construction sector in the UK and New Zealand.

In New Zealand, Amanda initiated & directed the National KPI Project, working with CAE and Building Research, following up on the ground work carried out by Dr Jason Le Masurier over the last 3 years. She held a seat on the Construction Industry Council during her role with CAE which gave her an invaluable insight into the NZ industry.

Amanda's recent projects have focused on implementing Benchmarking & Performance Improvement programmes with organizations such as ANZ Bank, Naylor Love, Stellar Projects and a number of others.

Her main area of focus in recent years has been in developing integrated supply teams for clients with repeat programmes of work such as schools, housing, high street branches etc. She has developed & implemented a seven step methodology for achieving tangible & dramatic improvements in delivery performance.
