This course provides an introduction to policy work in the New Zealand context, including policy processes, the roles and accountabilities of advisers and the skills and competencies required to be successful at policy work.
Who Should Attend:
The course is designed for those who are relatively new to policy advisory and analyst roles.
Learning Objectives:
* Understand the context for policy advisory work in the New Zealand public sector Understand the roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of advisers and analysts
* Explore the opportunities and challenges of performing policy analysis and advisory roles
* Discuss what 'value' and 'quality' means in policy work
Course Outline:
* Policy analysis and advising in the New Zealand public sector
* Understanding policy processes and systems
* The roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of analysts and advisers
* Policy work: art, science and craft
* Enhancing performance in policy work: identifying key capabilities for individuals and organisations
Course Format:
This course will use a variety of different formats including presentation, small and large group discussion, case study and role plays. Participants complete a pre-course questionnaire to identify specific areas of interest, and are sent a small amount of pre-course reading material.

Claudia Scott is Professor of Public Policy at Victoria University's School of Government and at the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. Her research and teaching interests are in Policy Analysis and Advising, Strategic Planning and Management, Health Policy and Local Government.
