Peter the Great dramatically transformed traditional Russian culture, including art and architecture, by introducing broad modernising reforms in emulation of Western Europe. This course begins by exploring traditional Russian Orthodox culture and the icon tradition. It then examines the massive cultural transformation that occurred with the rise of Western-style art and architecture in 18th-century Russia as a result of Peter's reforms. It also considers Peter's establishment of Saint Petersburg - "the Venice of the North" - in opposition to the medieval capital Moscow.

Target Audience:
This course is for anyone interested in European history and culture and who has travelled, or intends to travel, to Russia.
