Leaders within any organisation are expected to 'be strategic' often without any clear definition of what this entails. This course explores the practical application of 'thinking strategically' by specifying the attributes and organisational barriers to strategic thinking, and by exploring cultural systems that shape and limit the options considered in decision making.

This is a provocative course that provides the space and time to discuss and illustrate a range of strategic options for New Zealand. The role of effective leadership for strategy development and application will be explored, as will a number of practical strategy tools that will help course members improve their leadership skills.

Who Should Attend:
Those in leadership positions within businesses or public sector organisations who wish to develop an understanding of strategic thinking and how this can improve their leadership capability.

Course Objectives:
* Understand the nature of strategy and strategic thinking Clarify the role of leadership in driving strategy in the organisation
* Learn to apply the leading tools and models used by practical strategists and leaders
* Understand the context in which strategy is practised in New Zealand and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region
* Gain insights into the strengths and limitations of strategy formulation as currently used in New Zealand and the opportunities for improvement

Course Outline:
* What is strategy and where does leadership fit in?
* What is strategic thinking? Examples of strategic thinking
* The Liedtka Model explained and illustrated
* Strategic decision making: alternative paradigms
* Focus on New Zealand: how strategic are we as a society?
* How does New Zealand stack up against other countries in the Asia-Pacific region at long-range strategy and policy formulation?
* Explore the strengths and limitations of our current mental models and mindsets
* Cultural and organisational issues.

Course Format:
This course will use a variety of teaching and learning activities, including discussion, guest speakers, workshop-style activities and use of multi-media resources. It is envisaged that the nature of this course will inspire much discussion and sharing of ideas and experiences.

Lance Beath is the Convener of Victoria University's School of Government postgraduate degree programme in strategic studies. He also teaches a number of the individual papers within the programme including a paper on strategic thinking. Lance has postdoctoral qualifications in theoretical thermodynamics and specialises in strategic consulting, defence and security policy.

Greg Claridge has worked as the strategic management knowledge leader of the State Services Commission; a senior management consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Wellington; and a foreign currency and interest rate product trader for several major merchant banks.
