Overview:
A good piece of short fiction makes for an intense and powerful reading experience. In this three-day workshop we’ll examine some fine examples of the genre and you’ll undertake guided writing exercises that will help you develop your style and subjects. The workshop covers all the stages of the writing process from the composting and germination of ideas to key points for publishing, and investigates aspects of the craft such as point of view, structure, dialogue and voice.

Target audience:
This course will appeal to anyone interested in creative writing, particularly the short fiction genre.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course students will have:
•Gained critical skills through examining short fiction examples.
•Developed their own writing style and subject matter.

Course outline:
This workshop follows all stages of the writing process, from developing ideas to key points for publishing. Aspects of the craft, such as point of view, structure, dialogue and voice, are also investigated.

Course format:
This is a three-day, hands-on course held on consecutive Saturdays. You will be given time in class for writing practice and set guided writing assignments to be undertaken as “homework” between sessions. The course also uses work-shopping, where you will share work in a constructive environment.

Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants will need to supply their own lunch, which can be purchased at nearby food outlets or you are welcome to bring your own.

Pre-course activity:
Approximately two weeks before the course starts you will be sent a workbook that includes readings and instructions for your first writing assignment (600-700 words). You will need to bring 13 printed copies of your completed assignment to the first class.
Teacher:
Susan Pearce is the author of Acts of Love (Victoria University Press, 2007) and has published short stories in various journals. She is a former teacher of the Short Fiction course at the International Institute of Modern Letters.
